Can a "Children at Play" sign be installed on my street?
The only time the Town of Smyrna will install a “Children at Play” sign is near a public park or play area. For liability reasons, the Town does not put “Children at Play” signs in other areas. Drivers must be aware that there are children at play in all neighborhoods.  More details...
Do I need a permit to build a new fence on my property?
  • An Agreement for Fence/Structure application must be filled out any time you construct, move or replace any accessory structure on your property. The Smyrna Zoning Ordinance does place restrictions on where fences can be erected. The Smyrna Planning office has a copy of most subdivision plats which illustrate any easements, property line dimensions, locations where property pins should be, etc. The Town does not survey property.   • Under NO circumstances can your fence enclose any utility meters.

Do I need a permit to install a new driveway or widen my existing driveway?
No one shall cut, build, or maintain a driveway across a curb or sidewalk without first obtaining a permit from the Public Works Department. (Ordinance Information)

Do my leaves have to be in bags?
The Town of Smyrna requires that leaves of loose yard clippings be in a biodegradable lawn bag.  (This is a heavy paper bag.)
Does the Town of Smyrna spray for mosquitoes?
The Town follows the guidelines of the Tennessee Department of Public Health and therefore, does not spray for mosquitoes. More details...
How do I get the brush truck to come to my house and pick up my brush/leaves?
There is no need to call for this service. The trucks follow a “route” and pick up whatever is out when they go by.
Is there someplace I can take my yard waste if I want to haul it myself?
The Town of Smyrna does not have a place for the public to take limbs or yard waste. They can be taken to the Rutherford County Landfill in Murfreesboro.
What do I do if there is a street light out in my neighborhood?

When will the brush truck be in my neighborhood again?
There is no way to know when the trucks will be in any certain area. The length of time between pick-ups varies depending on how many loads they pick up on a cycle. The average length of time between pick-ups is 2-3 weeks.  (Keep in mind that in the spring time or after a storm it may be longer due to the volume that they pick up.)
Where do I get the biodegradable lawn bags?
These bags can be purchased at any of the local hardware stores, hardware departments or home improvement stores.
Who do I call if I see a dead animal on a public street or right-of-way?
To have a dead animal removed from a public street or right-of-way, please call (615) 459-9766 or click here to submit online. The Town then contacts Rutherford County Animal Control who keeps someone under contract for this service. The Town does not pick up dead animals.

Who do I call to report a traffic signal that is not functioning properly or has a burned out bulb?
To report a problem with a traffic signal, please call (615) 459-9766 or click here to submit online. If it is after business hours or on a weekend or holiday, call the Police Department at (615) 459-6644.
Who do I contact if I have standing water or some type of drainage problem around my house?
If your property does not drain properly or there is constantly standing water in the drainage ditch, please call the Public Works Department at (615) 459-9766 or the Storm Water Hotline at (615) 355-5789.
