JOB SUMMARY
This position receive and relays emergency and non emergency requests for police, fire, and after hours utility services utilizing radio, telephone, and computer equipment. Information is received and transmitted in a timely and accurate manner. This position must also be proficient in N.C.I.C., T.C.I.C., and TIES protocol and rules. This position also performs general clerical tasks to ensure adequate complaint records and reporting compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


• Receives, evaluates, relays, and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and utility services.
• Inputs and transmits call information using computer terminal keyboard, dispatches appropriate personnel, or refers callers to the appropriate service agency.
• Verifies and processes data as requested by field personnel.
• Monitors video security systems.
• Operates radio equipment to dispatch calls and to receive and communicate information.
• Utilizes computer terminal equipment to enter dispatch information, update unit status, and retrieve various data records.
• Notifies towing services, ambulance service, and other services as requested by personnel or the public.
• Conducts file inquiries in N.C.I.C., T.C.I.C., TIES, and local data banks to search for warrants, stolen property, driving records, missing persons, etc….
• Contacts law enforcement agencies to confirm warrants, then notifies requesting officers of confirmation.
• Prepares and regularly updates various logs, records, and reports.
• Enters, checks for accuracies, and maintains N.C.I.C., T.C.I.C., and TIES records on stolen property, wanted persons, missing persons, etc….
• Assists field units in locating situation’s premises/addresses by referring to maps and other resource materials.
• Attends staff meetings/briefings. Contribute ideas to improve overall department efficiency.
• Attend employer sponsored training as needed/assigned.
• May represent the department at conferences as assigned.
• Due to the unpredictable nature of emergency work, it is essential that employees
assigned to this classification be capable of working hours beyond their assigned shift.
• Answer incoming phone lines and be able to transfer them to the appropriate extension.
• Any other duties as assigned by Chief or Police Captain.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide coverage for other personnel in absences.
• Perform a variety of record keeping, filing, and indexing and other general clerical work.
• Manually activate interior and exterior doors from the communication center.
• Test and inspect equipment as required.
• Change recording tapes.
• Provide general instruction to new employees.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Employee must posses a high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Must pass a typing test and type 35 wpm.
• Employee must become proficient (within the training period) with the policies and procedures of the Town of Smyrna and the Smyrna Police Dept.
• Employee must pass a thorough background check.
• Employee must never have been arrested or convicted of any crimes involving drugs, alcohol, or violence.
• Employee must be able to pass a physical and psychological exam administered by a licensed doctor.
• Employee will be required to maintain proficiency in emergency telecommunications through annual in-service training.
• Employee must be able to perform effectively through high stress situations.
