Southwest Community Park
Development on Morton Lane One of the major components of the present Parks Master Plan (2006-2020) is the development of a large community park in the southwest area Smyrna. The idea of this park is to serve the residents in the Smyrna town limits while also serving future residents that presently reside in the Smyrna Urban Growth Boundary. The Town of Smyrna purchased 80 acres from Rutherford County in efforts to better serve the town's recreational needs. Phase I of this facility includes baseball fields, shelters, playgrounds and walking trails. The Smyrna Parks Advisory Board wanted to address the needs of the baseball program by developing a facility that would house the recreational baseball league in Phase I. The Parks Advisory Board also wanted to ensure that the park would also serve the daily needs of the citizens by developing other amenities in Phase 1 such as the shelters, playground and walking trails. Phase II includes adult size softball fields, additional shelters and playgrounds. In Phase III the master plan calls for the construction of a community center to include aquatics, gyms and other fitness programs. The Park is presently in the design phase. The engineering firm of Dempsey, Dilling and Associates is hard at work developing plans for the project so as to bid as soon as possible. The Town hopes to bid the construction of the park sometime this summer barring any setbacks. The Smyrna Town Council and Smyrna Parks Advisory Board are making recreation a priority in the Town of Smyrna by developing facilities such as this park. Just as Lee Victory Park has provided recreation for the north side of Smyrna this park will serve the needs of residents and visitors for many generations to come. |
