READY, SET, RUN!!!
The Town of Smyrna Parks & Recreation Department is one of six recreation agencies nationwide that has been chosen to conduct Ready, Set, Run!, a program launched by the nonprofit National Alliance for Youth Sports to help children ages 8-13 embrace running and daily exercise.
Registration for Ready, Set, Run! will take place during the months of April and early May at the Smyrna Parks Athletic Office during normal business hours, to introduce area children to running and prepare them to participate in a 5K race. The program will begin May 17th and will be held two times a week, on Tuesdays/Thursdays or a Saturday morning in lieu of a weekday. Participation is free to the first 15 participants and will close at 20 participants. Volunteer male and female coaches are also requested.
Ready, Set, Run! is a character-building running program that will train children to participate in the Smyrna Parks 5K Run scheduled for Saturday, August 6th at Springs Park. The curriculum-based program equips participants with the physical training and goal-setting mentality needed to accomplish their running goals in a fun, stress-free atmosphere.
The 12-week program is comprised of two, 1.5 hour sessions each week. The sessions feature a warm-up, a variety of innovative running games and exercises and a cool-down. Additionally, issues like enhancing confidence and self-esteem, respecting authority, dealing with peer pressure, the importance of performing community service, being a model student and friend and fueling their bodies through proper nutrition, among other important points are covered.
Participants receive a t-shirt and a workbook that takes them through the 12-week training process.
Smyrna
Fire and Police Youth Academy
June 6 - 10, 2011
The Smyrna Fire Department and the Smyrna Police Department are proud to announce a joint effort for the children of the Town of Smyrna. On the dates June 6 - 10th, a Youth Academy will be held at the Smyrna Fire station #2 located on Fitzhugh Blvd. The sessions are from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM. to 12:00 P.M. on Friday. Graduation will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday. A fee of $30.00 is required and the participants will be provided with lunch Monday through Thursday. Checks can be made out to the Town Of Smyrna. The sessions will be in a summer camp type agenda mixing outside and inside activities. The purpose of the academy is to interact with the children in a positive way and to demonstrate to the children the activities that both departments use on a daily basis. The number one focus, however, is safety in the daily lives of these children in various situations involving both fire and police services. The academy will use the officers and division personnel to incorporate “hands on” of various skills that the participants will find both challenging and fun.
Spring Brush and Limb Removal Service
Spring is on. It’s no secret that there are a lot
of houses being built in Smyrna every day. However, what you may not realize, is
that as all of those houses have been built over the last 20 years, a lot of
trees have also been planted. As the houses get older, the trees get larger and
as storms come through, occasionally limbs come off. If you’re a good gardener
and a little lucky, those trees grow big and tall, and then you have to deal
with the falling leaves each year.
The brush/leaf removal service is free to all residents of Smyrna. The Streets
Department runs the program. The Streets Department, a division of Public Works
explains that the program is operated with the following guidelines:
1. The pile of brush must be left within
four (4) feet of the edge of the road. This allows the crew to have access to
the debris without making a mess in the resident’s yard.
2.
The pile of brush must not be placed under trees, overhead wires or guy wires so
that our equipment can reach it without posing a danger to the operator. Also
piles must be kept away from mailboxes or other structures to avoid damage to
the structure.
3. The maximum diameter of limbs is six (6) inches. Anything thicker than
this will not be picked up.
4. The pile of brush can be no larger than ten (10) feet by ten (10)
feet. If you think you will have more than this, consider laying out one pile
for now and the other pile the next month.
5. The chipper cannot handle vines, loose leaves or root balls.
6. Do not include in your pile any building materials, plastic, metal,
wire, cardboard, paper or glass.
7. If you have hired a commercial tree service, have them haul off the
debris. In all likelihood, they are already billing you for it. The Town of
Smyrna will not pick up anything cut by a "for profit" trimming or clearing
service.
8. Leaves can be picked up. Simply put them in bio-degradable bags and
leave them at the edge of your yard. Loose leaves will not be picked up.
9. DO NOT put pile on street....... If an accident occurs as a
result of this, the homeowner will be liable for the damages.
10. There is no need to schedule a pickup. The town is divided into sections and
one section at a time is cleaned. The length of time between pick-ups varies
depending on the amount of debris in the different sections.
11. This service is provided for residential citizens only. We do not
pick up at any commercial or multi-family dwellings, as approved by our Council.
*Note* The
brush/leaf removal service is a free public service
for the residents and homeowners of Smyrna.
The Town of Smyrna will not pick up anything cut by
a "for profit" trimming or clearing service.

Despite all the public education efforts of utilities and the government, excavation damage remains the leading cause of distribution pipeline incidents. April has been designated Safe Digging Month and APGA encourages members to take this opportunity to remind the public that using the one-call to have utilities marked before digging is the best way to ensure safety.
Low-Cost Non-Potable Water Is Now
Available In Smyrna
The Town is adding repurified water to its water supply offerings for its
customers. Repurified water is water that has been treated for limited public
use through the waste water plant. The repurified water is limited to
non-potable or non-drinking water use by state regulations. The twice-treated
water is treated with ultraviolet exposure and chlorination to achieve
disinfection.
Potential Uses? Irrigation, landscape impoundments, wetlands wildlife
habitats, streams, industrial cooling, toilet flushing, vehicle washing, crop
irrigation, recreational impoundments, and some industrial uses.
Where Is This Available? The distirbution mains will be located along Sam
Ridley Parkway, Nissan Blvd., and Stonecrest Parkway. Distribution mains and
services can be extended to existing irrigation customers and potential
committed customers who are within 1000 feet of the transmission mains.

For New Service Water Customers: If offsite reclaimed water system
improvements are required for any proposed development within 1000 ft. of the
repurified water supply mains, the developer shall pay the cost of all offsite
repurified water lines. The mains must be installed in accordance with the
Town’s standard specifications. If the Town has a need for the offsite or onsite
repurified water system to be larger than needed for the developer, the Town
will enter into a contract with the developer, prior to work commencing, to pay
for any upsizing needed by the Town.
Attached is a Repurified Water
