Smyrna Fireworks Show 2009 Planned Road Closures

Each year we look forward to the Town of Smyrna’s annual Fourth of July Celebration. This year is no different. On Friday, July 3, 2009, the Town of Smyrna will hold the Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Show at the Lee Victory Recreation Park at 102 East Sam Ridley Parkway. There will be activities in the park starting at 5:00 PM prior to the Fireworks Show that will begin at 9:00 PM.

As in past years, we want this to be a fun time for families and friends to gather and enjoy the activities and fireworks. At the same time, safety is always our main concern. Due to safety issues, we will be closing the following roadways on July 3, 2009 from 8:45 PM until 9:30 PM while the fireworks are being shot :

Sam Ridley at Fitzhugh Boulevard
Sam Ridley at Nolan Drive
Sam Ridley at Threet Industrial Road
Sam Ridley west of Nolan Drive
Noland Drive at Plaza Drive. Plaza Drive will remain open as a detour for traffic.

The above road closures meet the National Fire Protection Agency’s required minimum for a secured area during the firing of mortars (fireworks).

We do not wish to inconvenience anyone by these road closures, but this is a necessity in order to insure that our fireworks presentation is as safe as possible. Any traffic on Threet Industrial needing to exit the area during the road closure may do so via Aviation Parkway.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience in this matter.

Smyrna's Chipper Service

It’s no secret that there are a lot of houses being built in Smyrna every day. However, what you may not realize, is that as all of those houses have been built over the last 20 years, a lot of trees have also been planted. As the houses get older, the trees get larger and as storms come through, occasionally limbs come off. If you’re a good gardener and a little lucky, those trees grow big and tall, and then you have to deal with the falling leaves each year.

The chipper service is free to all residents of Smyrna. The Streets Department runs the program. The Streets Department is in the Public Works Division explains that the program is operated with the following guidelines:

    1. The pile of brush must be left within four (4) feet of the edge of the road. This allows the crew to have access to the debris without making a mess in the resident’s yard.
    2. The pile of brush must not be placed under trees, overhead wires or guy wires so that our equipment can reach it without posing a danger to the operator.   Also piles must be kept away from mailboxes or other structures to avoid damage to the structure.
    3. The maximum diameter of limbs is six (6) inches. Anything thicker than this will not be picked up.

    4. The pile of brush can be no larger than ten (10) feet by ten (10) feet. If you think you will have more than this, consider laying out one pile for now and the other pile the next month.
    5. The chipper cannot handle vines, loose leaves or root balls.
    6. Do not include in your pile any building materials, plastic, metal, wire, cardboard, paper or glass.
    7. If you have hired a commercial tree service, have them haul off the debris. In all likelihood, they are already billing you for it.  The Town of Smyrna will not pick up anything cut by
a "for profit" trimming or clearing service.
    8. Leaves can be picked up. Simply put them in bio-degradable bags and leave them at the edge of your yard. Loose leaves will not be picked up.

9.  Do not put pile on street.  If an accident occurs as a result of this, the homeowner will be liable for the damages.
   10. There is no need to schedule a pickup. The town is divided into sections and one section at a time is cleaned. The length of time between pick-ups varies depending on the amount of debris in the different sections.

11.  This service is provided for residential citizens only.  We do not pick up at any commercial or multi-family dwellings, as approved by our Council.

The program has been so successful that each year the Town spends approximately $150-200,000 per year on personnel and equipment. This year, the Town Council authorized the purchase of a new boom truck for $120,000. This new truck will allow us to move faster and provide a better level of service to the citizens of Smyrna.

*Note* The chipper service is a free public service for the residents and homeowners of Smyrna.
