To apply for a position of dispatcher, you must pick up an application
from the Police Department, or from the Human Resources Department
located in Smyrna City Hall. As soon as a position becomes available,
you will be notified and given a testing date; the test will be
given by an independent company, and the Police Department is
unable to give instructions on study advice or material. If a
passing score is achieved, you will then be asked to attend an
oral interview. Individuals selected will then be given an extensive
background check, medical examination, and psychological examination.
If the qualifications are met, you will then be accepted as a
telecommunicator for the Smyrna Police Department, and begin an
extensive 11 week training course on site from certified trainers.
The telecommunicator must also attend a week long NCIC Training
Course, an APCO 40 hour Basic Telecommunicators training course,
and be certified to receive calls on the TDD machine for the hearing
impaired before becoming a certified telecommunicator.
Every telecommunicator will be expected to be able to work any
shifts or any days, with no specific shift or day off guaranteed.
Do not apply for a position as a telecommunictor with expectations
of becoming a police officer. Telecommunication is a career.
Starting pay for a dispatching position begins at $33,000.00+
with an excellent fringe benefit package including health insurance
and retirement benefits.
