HOW TO APPLY FOR A POLICE OFFICER POSITION
During the recruiting period prior to the written and physical agility testing, applicants must submit the items below. Failure to submit all items prior to the written test will disqualify an applicant from employment. Applications will only be accepted during recruiting periods and no applications will be accepted after the recruiting period ends and the posting closes.
All police applicants must apply during open posting times and only through the HR department.

1. Application for employment

You may obtain a Town of Smyrna employment application in person at Smyrna City Hall, 315 S. Lowry St. Smyrna, TN or on line at www.townofsmyrna.org / hr link. All applications must be fully completed and signed. You may attach a resume to the application and any relevant certifications. However, resumes will not be considered in lieu of a completed employment application. This means that you must complete without omission all questions on the employment application, even if your resume contains similar information. Failure to fully complete the employment application without omission will disqualify you from consideration for employment.

2. Proof of Education

The Police Officer position requires one of the following to be eligible for the position
• A minimum of 2 years (sixty semester hours) from an accredited college. Submit a copy of your diploma/transcript of your attendance from an accredited college/university.
• 2 years military experience. Submit DD214 showing honorable discharge from military.
• 2 years experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer. Submit a copy of current P.O.S.T. certification

3. Current driving record
 

You must submit with your employment application a current driving record. Driving records may be obtained at the TN Department of Safety, located at:

You may submit your employment application, proof of education/experience and driving record by mail or hand delivery to Smyrna City Hall, 315 S. Lowry St., Smyrna, TN 37167 attention HR Department-Police officer position. City Hall is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am till 4:30 pm. If you wish to receive confirmation that your application has been received, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. After the posting closes, applicants will receive via mail information about the testing schedule.
Applicants for Town of Smyrna Police Officer positions must pass a written test with a passing score of 80% or better to proceed to the next level of screening. Applicants will be interviewed in accordance to the test score starting with the highest score and moving down the list. Due to the high number of applicants, unfortunately not all applicants will be interviewed. Example: Ten individuals score 95% on the exam. Those ten would be interviewed before someone who scored 80%. If the hiring needs are met before the next scheduled exams, that individual that scored 80% would have to reapply and take the exam again to be considered. Interviews will be conducted between testing times to fill hiring needs of the Police department. Police officer applicant testing is normally given twice a year depending on the vacancies that need to be filled during the year.
The next phase of screening process is comprehensive background/investigation process and physical agility testing. Applicants not meeting the Town of Smyrna’s hiring criteria will be eliminated for consideration for employment. Passing scores on the written and physical agility test do not guarantee that an applicant will be hired. The Town of Smyrna strives to hire the best-qualified applicants and considers various factors such as previous experience, the job interview, references, etc.
Applicants passing all screening examinations will be placed in an applicant pool. As openings occur between test times, applicants will be selected from this pool. Vacancies for filling open positions between test times will not be posted. All job offers made are contingent upon satisfactory results of a criminal background check, post offer psychological examination and post offer physical and drug screen.
If the applicant pool is depleted prior to the next scheduled applicant testing, a new round of applicant testing may be offered. If the pool is not depleted before the next scheduled applicant testing, candidates will be required to successfully complete a new application and go through the hiring process again to be considered for employment.

JOB SUMMARY


This job performs general police duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State and Local laws and ordinances. This is a full performance level public safety and community service related police work position. An employee in this job prevents, detects and investigates criminal offenses and other irregularities, apprehends and assists in the prosecution of criminal, traffic and municipal violations, and provides a variety of community service activities to members of the public. Work is performed under general supervision. Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with functional precedents, established practices, and well-defined policies. This work may involve seizure and custody of money or other property as well as collection and preservation of physical evidence. Contacts with the general public, the law enforcement community, criminal justice personnel, and officials of other governmental agencies are extensive.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following:
• Reporting for duty at the time and location specified.
• Reporting in a duty uniform that is clean and serviceable and that presents a professional appearance.
• Familiarizing themselves with official information posted or disseminated before going on duty.
• Proceeding directly to their area of responsibility without delay and shall not loiter about the police building
• Having a working knowledge of Federal and State laws, local ordinances, department policies and procedures, and the Town Handbook.
• Directing their efforts to carrying out the basic functions of the department: protection of life and property, preservation of the public peace, prevention of crime, apprehension of offenders, and the proper enforcement of all laws and ordinances.
• Familiarizing themselves with and remaining in their area of assignment during tours of duty, not leaving it except for the transaction of police business.
• Properly investigation and reporting all cases assigned to them, including, unusual occurrences, criminal activity, traffic accidents, apprehension of offenders, security of crime scene, collection of evidence, recovery of property, etc…
• When giving their attention to any complaint, call for assistance, arrest, or other duty, they shall attend to such duty with business like dispatch and courtesy without unnecessary loss of time.
• Completing all department paperwork, insuring that all reports are written clearly, concisely, and ate thorough.
• Filing all required reports with a designated supervisor in a timely manor, and pass on pertinent information to facilitate the continuity of operation,
• Making every effort to interact with citizens and fellow employees in a courteous, polite sympathetic and professional manner.
• The strict adherence to Policies and Procedures as outlined in the Police Department Manual and the Town Handbook.
• Performing other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

An applicant must:
• Be 21 years of age
• Be a citizen of the United States
• Not have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving “moral turpitude” and not have been release or discharged under other than honorable conditions from the U.S. Armed Forces
• Meet one of the following education and /or experience requirements
1. Have completed a minimum of 2 years (sixty semester hours) from an accredited college, or
2. 2 years military experience, or
3. 2 years experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer
• Have fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
• Possess or be able to obtain a valid Tennessee drivers license
• Be able to pass a physical examination by a licensed physician
• Have good moral character
• Be free of all apparent mental disorders
• Have visual acuity correctable to 20/20 with the ability to recognize basic colors.
• Receive a passing score (80% or better) on the Smyrna Police Departments written exam.
• Possess a level of physical fitness, dexterity, and readiness necessary to successfully complete pre-employment physical fitness test.
• Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate before interview board.
OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Must complete police officer certification requirements set by the Tennessee P.O.S.T Commissions within one (1) year of appointment to the position.
• Individual will be required to maintain proficiency and certification in police work through annual in-service training and firearms qualification.
• Ability to perform effectively under stress and in adverse conditions.
• Physical dexterity to carry out all assignments necessary to meet the performance standards expected of the position.
