The POST commission requires certification of any person, employee, appointed or designated as a full time Police Instructor involved in teaching in a commission approved school.

The Smyrna Police Department was the first in the State of Tennessee to set its department qualification standards at 84% for certification and employment. The State of Tennessee POST commission only requires 70%, and the State Academy only requires 75%. Smyrna also proudly boasts the highest firearms training it can offer to its officers. The department requires firearms training every other month for all sworn officers.
