The Smyrna Police Department Explorers Program was started to provide information about various topics and to students between the ages of 14 and 20 who are interested in careers in the criminal justice field. They are introduced to basic information about law enforcement topics such as investigations, careers, and patrol. This program also allows the students to familiarize themselves with the personnel and resources of the Smyrna Police Department. We currently have approximately 15 active members.

The Explorers meet each Monday night. Classes and guest speakers are planned for each meeting. The classes are informal and discussion is encouraged. The students are also given time to interact with each other and the instructors. In an effort to foster leadership qualities in the students, a rank structure was also developed.

Community service is a large part of the Explorers Program. The students are very interested in making their community a better place to live. They have assisted with the Shop With A Cop Program, the Christmas Parade, the Food Bank, and hosted a lunch with the seniors at the Smyrna Senior Citizens Center.

This program currently receives no funding from any source.

The Smyrna Police Department Explorers Program provides a great opportunity to the students it serves and the communities they will serve. This program encourages the students’ natural inclinations to want to make the world a better place. Through leadership development and community service, we hope this attitude will remain with them.
