Patrol Commander
Captain Jeffery W. Dwyer |
The results of 2005 Special Census are in and show that over
33,000 people now call Smyrna home. This is a significant
increase since the previous 2002 census. It is apparent that
many have and many more continue to realize that “We have it
good in Smyrna”.
The Smyrna Police Department plays a significant role in making
sure that we continue to have it so good.
Your police department is comprised (as of May 2006) of 67
sworn officers and 27 civilian employees. Each of these men and
women are highly educated, skilled, and motivated. Each is
dedicated to providing the finest police service available
anywhere. Of these 67 sworn, 44 are currently assigned to the
Patrol division.

The Patrol division and its personnel provide a
wide variety of services to include but by no means limited to:
-
Traffic enforcement / Traffic
control
-
Accident investigation
-
Response to calls for service
-
Response to calls for Emergency
medical service
-
Investigation of reported criminal
activity
-
Directed neighborhood patrol
-
Transportation of prisoners
-
Zones / Businesses patrol
-
Education and community awareness
-
Special projects and fund raising
events for the community
Three officers have
been assigned as Warrants Officers; their primary function is
the service of criminal warrants, subpoenas, providing court
security, as well as scheduling and transporting prisoners to
and from various detention facilities and the appropriate court.
In 2005, Smyrna officers served 1891 warrants, and transported
over 1050 prisoners.
Our most recent change is the assignment of 2 officers to
Traffic Enforcement / Crash Investigation duties, with
additional officers to be tasked with these duties in the near
future. These officers have received extensive training and will
focus their efforts on traffic related problem areas and/or
events. It is the Department's intention, through education and
enforcement, to make Smyrna as safe and appealing to travel in
and through as it is in which to live.
As the Town continues to grow in area and population, police
resources will most certainly continue to be stretched to the
limit. The citizens may rest assured that the Smyrna Police
Department and its dedicated men and women will continue to
adapt to meet the many challenges that the future will surely
bring.
The men and women here at the Smyrna Police Department want
everyone who resides and or works here in Smyrna to know that we
are here to protect and serve you. We take great pride in our
chosen profession and in the service we provide. We will
continue,
with your assistance, to make Smyrna a safe and attractive place
to call home.
