On
Veterans Day 2003, at The Mapleview Cemetery, a
monument and flagpole were dedicated to our veterans. Here is an
excerpt from Mayor Bob Spivey’s comments at the ceremony:
“It is my honor to dedicate this monument and flag pole to our
veterans. I want to express my thanks to Commander Gale, Post
Chaplain LaForest and VFW POST 8422, for spearheading this effort.
I want to thank the Veterans Administration for donating this
wonderful plaque. A special thanks goes to Eddie and Betty Brewer
of Rutherford County Monuments for the donation of the beautiful
stone base for the plaque.
Our appreciation also goes to the Building and Grounds and Street
Departments of Smyrna Public Works for their efforts.
The flag, which has flown over our nation’s capital, has been
donated by Congressman Bart Gordon.
Today, we have many men and women from Tennessee, and especially
from Smyrna, who are on active duty throughout the world. We
should all keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”
